Here's a comment from someone who attended a GCSO event:
"Your Orchestra is the "Pride of Gary, Indiana" .. From a teacher who attended our most recent concert for children.

May 12, 2006: The annual Children's Concert for 2,500 Children, Gary, IN was a "Happy Birthday" Celebration to Gary, Indiana's 100th year!

This concert was a hit!  Over 2,500 children in grades 3 and 4 thoroughly enjoyed the music of The Gary Civic Symphony Orchestra. We celebrated the birthdays of
1. "GARY, INDIANA -100 years"
2. "Wolfgang A. Mozart - 250 Years"
3. Our Sponsor, "The Gary Historical and Cultural Society's 30 years",
4. And any children or adults born on May 12, the date of this concert.
Many "Thank-You's" to our Sponsor - The Gary (IN) Historical & Cultural Society, and the Co-sponsors, The Gary Community School Corporation, and various foundations. Over 2,500 children sang and clapped and learned about the instruments of the orchestra from Conductor Edwin Carter and the musicians.
We also featured youth musicians at these concerts, and this year was no exception.  10 of Gary's fine youth musicians, from the high schools and in college, performed. They have or are receiving their musical training from the many GCSO veteran musicians who are teachers, as well as professional performers.
Composer Burgess Gardener's composition "Happy Birthday: A Fantasia" was simply "the bomb"!
And we gave historical t-shirts to all the children and their teachers who just happened to be born on May 12.
